Zymeworks is a clinical-stage biopharmaceutical company dedicated to the discovery, development and commercialization of next-generation bispecific and multifunctional biotherapeutics, initially focused on the treatment of cancer. Zymeworks’ suite of complementary therapeutic platforms and its fully-integrated drug development engine provide the flexibility and compatibility to precisely engineer and develop highly-differentiated product candidates.

Zymeworks is seeking a highly motivated Senior Research Associate or Associate Scientist to join the Analytics group within the ADC Therapeutic Development department. The Analytics group is responsible for the biophysical characterization of antibodies, antibody drug conjugates (ADCs) and/or other therapeutic proteins, and the advancement of ADC therapeutic candidates and platform technologies. The successful candidate will be part of a dynamic and motivated team responsible for supporting pipeline program advancement and contributing to core platform technology improvements and innovation. The candidate will be challenged to critically analyze results and contribute to the Zymeworks team effort to create clinically and commercially relevant therapeutics.

This position will be based in our laboratory in Vancouver, BC and will report to our Scientist in Mass Spectrometry.

As a condition of employment, Zymeworks requires all employees to be fully vaccinated against Covid-19 and provide verification of such.

Key Responsibilities

  • Independently design and execute experiments for the production, conjugation and biophysical characterization of antibodies using mass spectrometry.
  • Perform detailed protein characterization including amino acid sequence confirmation, identification and quantitation of post-translational modifications, integrity analysis, sequence variant analysis, intact/reduced mass analysis.
  • Design, develop and, when necessary, qualify LC-MS-based analytical methods in support of project advancement.
  • Communicate within and across organizations to align methodology and share analytical findings.
  • Explore and evaluate new technologies to improve throughput, precision, accuracy, capabilities, and overall quality of methods employed.
  • Actively engages with scientific literature, industry publications and internally generated data to enhance project understanding.
  • May be involved in identifying targets for therapeutic development.
  • May assist in preparation and co-authoring of patent applications, research reports and/or scientific papers.
  • Assists in maintaining a clean, organized, and operational lab. Maintain and troubleshoot LC-MS equipment as well as other instrumentation used in protein analytics.
  • Conducts all activities in accordance with scientific standards, OH&S regulations and established policies and practices.
  • Adheres to standard procedures for generating, documenting and archiving data. An accurate, up to date lab notebook or electronic notebook is mandatory.
  • Fosters effective and collaborative working relationships with fellow employees and management.

Qualifications and Education

  • Senior Research Associate - Msc with 2-3 years related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Associate Scientist – PhD with 0-2 years related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Skills and Abilities

  • Proven interpersonal skills with the ability to work collaboratively as a member of a cross-functional team. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
  • Provide mentoring and coaching to more junior personnel.
  • Good organizational skills and the ability to work effectively in a high paced, fast changing environment while balancing activities across multiple projects. Results-oriented individual.
  • Develop new methodologies to address scientific questions.
  • Excellent oral, presentation, and scientific/technical writing skills.
  • In-depth understanding of antibody sequence and structure as well as common modifications and degradation mechanisms.
  • Advanced knowledge and proficiency in antibody/antigen purification by chromatography, antibody developability analysis (cIEF, DLS, DSF, AC-SINS, NS-ELISA), antibody affinity/kinetic analysis would be a plus.
