Summary

The Paralegal, IP is an integral member of the Legal team responsible for supporting all aspects of the management, monitoring, protection, and enforcement of the company's intellectual property.

Principal Responsibilities:

  • Support the IP legal team in the protection of company patent, trademark, copyright, and domain name portfolios.
  • Support patent prosecution and management workflows. Assist with PCT nationalization filings, and other application filings, submission of office action responses and information disclosure statements, as needed. Prepare various supporting documents for foreign country prosecution as needed.
  • Assist with maintaining and managing docketing for all intellectual property matters; monitor patent docket activity by internal team and outside counsel. Review incoming new foreign Office Actions for in-house applications for new references to be cited in pending US applications and docket if needed. Follow up with outside counsel for confirmations of filing for outstanding open docket due dates.
  • Prepare Assignment, Declaration and other documents as needed, communicate with patent inventors and IP legal team (internal and external) for signatures, and follow up on outstanding signatures. File formal documents as needed.
  • Assist with Tracking and facilitating timely meeting of all patent office deadlines.
  • Assist with maintaining and updating company intellectual property databases and physical files.
  • Review and manage dockets prepared by outside counsel and assist with maintaining patent annuity records.
  • Attend docket meetings with internal IP legal team members.
  • Assist with special projects, e.g., intellectual property licensing, asset purchases and acquisitions.
  • Enter contract requests into database for review by contracts team, track as needed.
  • Manage invention disclosures.
  • Work within department guidelines and policies, as well as identify and recommend process improvements.

Qualifications:

  • Five or more years of legal experience in intellectual property support, in a law firm or IP function of a company, preferably in a pharmaceutical/biotechnology company.
  • Deep understanding of patent, trademark, copyright, and domain name processes and procedures.
  • Strong attention to detail and interpersonal skills with an emphasis on written and verbal communication.
  • Extensive expertise in Microsoft Word and Outlook, Adobe Acrobat, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Experience with USPTO and WIPO systems.

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree and/or paralegal certificate preferred.
