Position Summary
Seagen is seeking a high-performing Sr. Scientist (Purification) to join our MSAT Labs and Innovation team in Bothell, WA. This role will be responsible for identifying and implementing purification technical innovation that will contribute to future manufacturing development and improvement. The individual will independently lead/execute purification laboratory studies to support global manufacturing and new technology evaluation. The ideal candidate will have a high level of technical expertise in common downstream unit operations, including chromatography, filtration separation, and tangential flow filtration. This is an exciting opportunity where this role will lead projects, troubleshoot technical challenges, and apply new, innovative technologies to manufacturing.
The final level of this position will be based on the candidate’s qualifications.
Principal Responsibilities:
- Leads identification, evaluation, and development of innovative manufacturing technologies within the field of cell culture
- Design and execute cell culture experiments (shake-flask, seed train expansion, production bioreactor) in support of process transfer, troubleshooting, process understanding, and continuous improvement
- Collaborate with MSAT team to create and foster a scientific climate of excellence to achieve business goals
- Supports process deviations, assesses product impact, prepares technical reports, and proposes process solutions and improvements
- Interfacing with development and manufacturing sites for process data analysis & mapping in order to anticipate potential risks and opportunities for improvements supporting next generation manufacturing processes
- Adhere to Good Documentation Practices for documenting experimental work using an ELN
- Maintain clear and timely records of experimental work and be able to organize, report, and clearly communicate results within the Technical Operations function and to cross-functional teams
- Serve as an upstream process subject matter expert on cross-functional teams and effectively communicate results, progress, and plans
Required Qualifications:
- In-depth technical knowledge of and demonstrated hands-on lab experience with bench-scale and pilot-scale bioreactor systems.
- Experience with operation/maintenance of bench and pilot scale purification equipment.
- Familiarity with equipment utilized in commercial cGMP manufacturing facilities is highly desirable.
- Good knowledge of structured methodologies for process design, scale-up/down models, process modeling, process control strategies and process validation.
- Understanding of statistical experimental design/data analysis is essential, advanced data analysis (e.g., MVDA) is highly desirable.
- Implementation of process analytical technologies and continuous chromatography is desirable
- The ability to work effectively in small matrix teams in a fast-paced environment with changing priorities and a high level of urgency. Highly motivated with the ability to work independently as well as on cross-functional and cross-site teams.
- The candidate must demonstrate high levels of integrity. Key competencies are management of complexity, driving for results, problem-solving and collaborating cross-functionally.
- Strong communication skills and computer literacy are essential.
- Demonstrated skills of independent thought and creativity in science and engineering.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering, biology, or another relevant life-science discipline with a minimum of 7 years of relevant industrial experience
- Alternatively, a Masters’ degree with a minimum of 5 years relevant industrial experience or a PhD degree with minimum 2 years relevant industrial experience

The hiring pay range for this position is $100,000 to $130,000 per year based on skills, education and experience relevant to the role. Other components of total compensation include a competitive equity grant at the time of hire (with additional annual grants, and grants upon promotion when applicable), and an annual bonus.
