With over 600 biotechnology and medical device companies, Wisconsin boasts fertile ground for success in the life science industry. Named as one of the top five hottest biotech markets in the world, the Badger state was recently selected as the locale for the National Stem-Cell Bank at the WiCell Research Institute by the National Institutes of Health (NIH). Much of the biotech industry is located near Madison or Milwaukee. Madison has been named one of the top cities for biotech in the United States.
The biotechnology industry of Wisconsin is aided by several organizations. Forward Wisconsin functions as a public-private partnership to attract businesses and job opportunities to Wisconsin. The Wisconsin Biotechnology and Medical Device Association (WBMA) works to cultivate Wisconsin’s reputation as a setting for public and private research in pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, and medical devices. The Wisconsin Technology Council serves as advisor to the Governor and Legislature for technology and science. Madison’s University Research Park (URP), affiliated with the University of Wisconsin-Madison fosters new research and development. Together with the Madison Gas & Electric (MGE) Innovation Center, the URP provides the space and incentives needed for continued growth and start-up endeavors. The Wisconsin Alumni Research Foundation (WARF) contributes over $45 million every year to research efforts at the UW-Madison.
Wisconsin provides a base for many biotech, pharmaceutical, and medical device companies, including GE Healthcare Technologies, Promega, PhysioGenix, Genencor International, Cellular Dynamics International, Inc., Deltanoid Pharmaceuticals, and Wicab. Additionally, the research organization WiCell Research Institute, Inc. aims to advance stem cell research.
The near future promises the completion of the $375 million Wisconsin Institute for Discovery and Morgridge Institute for Research. New developments appear to guarantee Wisconsin’s future as a life science industry force, proving again the Badger State’s motto of "Forward."
